Online Scenarios

Prevention (universal)

Preventative:

Key messages / information shared regularly to all stakeholders (pupils, parents, staff, leaders and governors) via assemblies, curriculum opportunities, newsletters, display boards

Schools can use resources from external agencies to support this, such as use of Pol-ed and public health resources.

Responsive:

Schools ensure the SCAR approach is consistently applied in school.

SCAR approached is used in school:

  • S – Stop the unsafe / illegal behaviour
  • C – Challenge the behaviour
  • A – Address with the pupil/s why it is inappropriate / unacceptable (teaching opportunity)
  • R – All incidents should be reported and recorded – including low level or first offences, it helps to build a picture.

Records will highlight whether the incident is categorised as a risk within school or risk outside of school (ROTH) so that data can be analysed and support be directed as necessary. Schools may seek support and advice from NCC children’s social care particularly regarding ROTH and MSET screening.

When the pupil is repeating the incidents, a safety plan / risk assessment is drawn up in conjunction with parents (and other agencies currently working with the child / family). Safety plan / assessment is reviewed regularly

Schools should analyse data regularly to look for trends and to measure the effectiveness of preventative and intervention strategies. They should analyse on-line incidents which take place in school separately from those which take place out of school.

External safeguarding support services involved to support the school with:

  • Training workshops / assemblies for pupils, staff and parents
  • Targeted workshops to be delivered in response to specific contextual issues
  • Targeted 1:1 or group work delivered by external agencies such as CES and others which may be accessed through CFO (Community Family Offer).

Safeguarding support service can support / advise school with developing effective support plans / risk assessments

Schools can consult with their link family partner or early help adviser.

Support may be available for families and children or young people through the Community Family Offer (CFO) and through community hubs.

On-line resources are available through:

Schools must refer to statutory services when thresholds have been met. They can seek advice from these services prior to referring if they have doubts as to whether thresholds have been reached.
