Incident Description
A Year 8 student live-streamed on TikTok from within school during the school day, walking around the site with her camera her phone.
A child protection professional in Northern Ireland contacted the school after observing highly suggestive comments from unsolicited male adults.
Guidance for Safeguarding Response
- School informed parents/carers who were extremely shocked
- School staff were concerned that she had travelled around school and no one had realised she was videoing
- Training was delivered to staff and tighter monitoring was implemented around corridors during unstructured times
- Information was recorded on the school’s safeguarding system for the child involved (Category of Behaviour: Unsafe Online)
- This child had previous incidents recorded 3 outside of school posting inappropriate content about other pupils on TikTok and one inside where she had videoed during parents evening scenes in the hall
- School issued a 2 day suspension as per their behaviour and Acceptable Use policy
- At the re-integration meeting a safety plan was put in place which involved the pupil being monitored whilst in school and having to regularly report to adults and a series of 1:1 sessions on safe conduct online
Additional actions which could be considered:
- Pol-ed sessions for the group and wider peer group from secondary resources such as ‘Are we responsible with social media?’
Agencies Involved in this Incident
School contacted their safeguarding advisory service who provided intensive support for the pupil to focus on the potential danger they were putting themself in.
Local authority inclusion team informed of the suspension
Early help had previously been offered and declined and was offered again after this incident at the re-integration meeting
