Incident Description

A year 1 boy was watching inappropriate videos and repeating misogynistic language in class when dysregulated.

The child has a diagnosis of autism.

He is regularly repeating verbatim phrases used in the videos he is watching.

He is struggling significantly in school and is very violent and aggressive towards staff and other children.

School have been determined not to suspend because of his young age but there have been multiple complaints from parents in the Y1/2 classes claiming their children are terrified to come to school.

Guidance for Safeguarding Response

  • School had explicit conversations with the child’s parent/s around the inappropriateness of content their child is accessing and the impact this is having on their child’s safety and of other children
  • School discussed parent controls and safety settings and offered support with this from technology lead in school who met with mum and ensured devices were all set with appropriate restrictions
  • School made a referral to Children’s Social Care who advised Early Help which was offered to the parent but turned down
  • The frequency of incidents and the impact on other children was recorded on the school’s record keeping system with the offer of Early Help and the refusal to engage made explicit in the records
