SARC Training: Introduction to Sexual Assault Referral Centre Services

This training is available to professionals across all services who work with children and young people under 18 years of age, and adults aged 18-25 who have complex learning needs.

Topics covered:

· CYP support within our service.
· Referral pathways into SARC
· The importance of Strategy Meetings.
· Discussing the differences between Child Protection (CP) and Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) medicals.
· Timeframes for collecting forensic evidence. (DNA)
· Timeframes for medications available at SARC following CSA.
· Discussions around what a SARC medical will involve.
· Onward support service referrals we offer.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

Understand the circumstances in which the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) should be invited to strategy meetings and the process for involving SARC professionals.

Understand the SARC referral pathway and how to make an appropriate referral.

Demonstrate knowledge of the forensic evidence collection timeframes following sexual assault

Understand the time-sensitive nature of medical interventions following sexual assault, including key treatment timeframes.

Explain the purpose of a SARC medical examination, what it involves, and the potential benefits of the examination for the individual, including both healthcare and forensic considerations.
