Study Evidences Suicide Risk Among New Fathers
The 1001 Critical Days Foundation have commissioned a research programme by Swansea University looking at suicide rates of Fathers in the UK during the perinatal period, the results provide a previously unknown evidence base to work from.
In the UK, 2-3 babies a week lose their Dad to suicide. Previously, information with regards to male suicide did not consider impacting factors of parenthood so it has been difficult to gather the evidence needed to recognise risk and inform responses.
Coinciding with World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September, this world-first study, which uses data based on findings in Wales, highlights an overlooked crisis in paternal mental health.
