SARC (Sexual Assault Referral Centre)
SARCs (sexual assault referral centres) are specialist medical and forensic services for anyone who has been raped or sexually assaulted. They are designed to be comfortable and multi-functional, providing private space for interviews and forensic examinations, and some may also offer sexual health and counselling services. Their services are free of charge and provided to women, men, young people and children.
Free, 24 hr support and practical help to anyone who has experienced sexual violence and/or sexual abuse.
SARC North East – provided a 24/7 service at four centres across the region in Teesside, Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle.
The SARC services were available 24 hours a day, seven days a week including public holidays to people over the age of 18. Our specialist staff provided advice to police and patients, support following recent and non-recent sexual assault, and also acute forensic examination.
