Incident Description
During the October half term holiday, two Year 5 boys encouraged each other to take nude selfies.
One boy sent a series of images to the other boy, who then shared them with their class WhatsApp group.
One of the pupils who received the images told their parents about the content shared.
- The police were contacted by one set of parents after seeking advice from a relative working in school
Guidance for Safeguarding Response
- While the police initially expressed concern over the “very pornographic” poses, the case was dropped after speaking with the parent of the child who posted the images
- The police contacted Children’s social care who after speaking with mum decided to take no further action
- School facilitated targeted workshops for this year group and a session for their parents.
- No other parents had contacted the police. School leaders were unsure how many had been informed by their children on the images posted or if any parents had checked their child’s phone and had discovered the images
- The headteacher and DSL was very concerned that despite annual online safety workshops for children and parents and regular sessions and newsletter throughout the year reinforced key points to keep self safe and report anything inappropriate, no-one had
- On advice from the police, a letter was sent out to all Y5 parents sharing that indecent images had been shared and school were hosting a meeting where all parents needed to attend to ensure they were best informed to keep their child safe
