Incident Description

Two brothers, Year 9 and 10 who were playing a game online, were encouraged by another gamer to take their parent’s credit card and buy more credits. The boys used their parent’s credit card and spent over £2,000.

Guidance for Safeguarding Response

  • School contacted police
  • School advised the parents to report the incident and the crime number to their bank who forwarded them to the fraud team
  • School recorded the incident on their record keeping system for both boys (Category: Online safety outside of school)
  • Both boys had already participated in online safety workshops with their year groups that half-term
  • School contacted Y gam and received free CPD around online gambling awareness and went on to develop a whole school gambling harm prevention programme
  • Referral made to Youth Justice Service

Agencies Involved in this Incident

Boys referred to Youth Justice Service and are accessing the Turnaround programme as part of early intervention and preventative work.

School sought support for the children, staff and parents from Y gam.
