Incident Description

A year 8 pupil created a Tik Tok video about staff and pupils within the school and shared it publicly.

School had already had several similar cases especially with year 7 children including reports from primary school where parents have deleted their Tik Tok accounts, but they have then started new ones.

Guidance for Safeguarding Response

• School revisited online safety messages to the whole school
• School requested external agencies via their safeguarding consultant to deliver online safety workshops with targeted pupils
• In this case the content was light-hearted but the activity of creating videos about others without their consent still had to be addressed
• If the content had shared false information and/or caused reputational damage or shared false allegations, then it would have been appropriate to report to the police
• The challenge and warning to the child was recorded on their incident log on the school’s record keeping system so that actions could be elevated by the school if there was any repetition of this behaviour

Additional actions which could be considered:

• Pol-ed sessions for the child and wider peer group from secondary resources such as ‘Are we responsible with social media?’ and ‘Banter or bullying?’.
