Online privacy and how to talk to children about it

Did you know that 17% of 3–5 year olds own a smartphone, and the majority of children (79%) own a smartphone by age 12? Most parents – even those who feel confident and informed – have significant gaps in their knowledge when it comes to online privacy. They may talk with their children about harmful content, but are often less aware of the need to have conversations about privacy settings, location sharing, age settings, and the many ways personal information is shared online.

Every day, primary school children tap ‘accept’ on apps, games and websites – often without realising how much personal information they may be sharing. A single click can reveal far more than a name. It can unveil friendships, interests, moods and even sleep patterns, creating a digital footprint that can last forever – or even be exploited by people with bad intentions.

In this session, Matthew Leeke and Marianne Morgan from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will introduce the Switched on to Privacy campaign and share practical, accessible ways practitioners can support parents and carers to help children make safer choices online.
