Brunswick Men’s Group

Following on from the NSCP news item “Research: The Impact of Fathers’ Poor Mental Health on Children

Partners have shared that there is a ‘Men’s Group’, on Tuesdays every week at Brunswick Place.

Doors open for coffee and connection @ 4pm and we start the conversation @ 4:30pm.

This is a weekly group for men in or seeking recovery, who want to do some inner work as part of their wellbeing.

ABOUT THE TUESDAY MENS GROUP

Group Aims (What is the purpose of the group?)

  • To inspire men to want to be better men (dads, sons, partners, husbands, friends, colleagues).
  • To develop healthy habits, rituals and behaviours that enable men to flourish and grow
  • To develop a spirituality of wholeness and healing (in body, mind and spirit)
  • To develop a deeper relationship with self, others and with their Higher Power (in whatever form that takes)

How the group works (Methodology)

  • We create a brave space where men demonstrate ‘courageous vulnerability’ by talking honestly about issues that affect them, which are typically associated with shame, secrecy, fear and stigma.
  • This develops greater awareness and agency, inspiring men to make positive changes in their life.
  • We promote a culture of trust with safeguarding and boundary setting to ensure people
  • The group agrees ways of working; a code of conduct based on respect, kindness and confidentiality.
  • The men choose the issues and subjects they want to talk about

Examples of issues discussed (talking about stuff that matters)

  • Raising awareness of misogyny and toxic masculinity, stoicism, the rise of the Incel and the Manosphere
  • Co-dependent and trauma-bonded relationships
  • Fatherhood – experiences of absent/abusive parenting, how did you experience your dad? what sort of dad do you want to be?
  • Role models – Who are your role models? Being a role model for others
  • Loneliness, Isolation and the value of connection and belonging
  • Relationships and unearthing your ‘life limiting beliefs’
  • Addiction – how many people struggle with behavioural addictions having found sobriety
  • Mental and physical health & wellbeing – what helps us to stay well in body, mind and spirit?
  • Food & Exercise – our relationship with food, binge eating, diets, the gym and body dysmorphia
  • The interplay between trauma, neurodiversity and addiction and how these can impact our life *
  • Trauma informed counselling – what it is and why it can help us.
  • Values – what values do you see in others ? What values do you aspire to

What the group is NOT . . .

Therapy or counselling (Recovery Church has access to trauma informed counselling)

  • A 12-step meeting
  • A place to solve each other’s problems; we are not trying to fix each other
