Briefing: Youth Unemployment Statistics
This briefing presents the latest statistics on youth unemployment in the UK as well as comparisons with other OECD countries.
In March to May 2025:
- there were 628,000 young people aged 16 to 24 who were unemployed, 31,000 more than the previous year. The unemployment rate for young people was 14.2%, up from 13.8% from the year before
- there were 3.80 million young people aged 16 to 24 in employment, 64,000 more than the previous year. The employment rate for young people was 51.2%, the same as the year before
- there were 2.99 million young people aged 16 to 24 who were economically inactive, 32,000 more than the previous year. The inactivity rate for young people was 40.4%, down slightly from 40.6% from the year before.
