Briefing: Children, Young People and the Built Environment

Children and young people (under the age of 18 years) make up over a fifth of the UK population. Their freedom to play outside or travel around local neighbourhoods, unsupervised by an adult, has declined over the last century. Across the UK, what used to be a normal part of childhood – playing outside in the local community with friends of all ages – has become an increasingly rare experience.

At the same time there has been an increase in incidence of poor mental health, unhappiness, loneliness and obesity. Although there are many reasons for this, the Marmott review on Fair Society, Healthy Lives and UNICEF have both highlighted the importance of outside spaces to children’s well being and physical health. The briefing highlights the wider benefits this brings for health, well-being and the realisation of vibrant, sustainable communities.
