Incident Description

A year 6 child (with an ASD) hacked the school website via an approved homework game and prevented staff access to the school website by changing log in/password details.

Guidance for Safeguarding Response

  • School reported to police as initially unaware that it was the work of one of their children
  • Police identified the child using their IP address
  • Cyber crimes unit worked with the student to promote their skills in a positive way.
  • Motivation was not malicious, the child was curious and aware they had the skills to do it.
  • In a similar incident however, school permanently excluded the child as they felt the child had deliberately broken into a secure system and read detailed information and had also shared/sold the password to other children
