Masking
Masking (or camouflaging) is a conscious or unconscious survival strategy, often used by neurodivergent (autistic, ADHD) individuals, to hide their true selves and mirror neurotypical behaviours to fit into social situations, avoid judgment, or feel safe. It involves suppressing traits like stimming, forcing eye contact, and scripting conversations, which can lead to extreme exhaustion, anxiety, and burnout.
