Why is Prevent and Channel important?

Radicalisation is a safeguarding concern. NSPCC Learning describes radicalisation as the process through which a person comes to support or be involved in extremist ideologies, and notes that it is in itself a form of harm.

Prevent provides a route for early, safeguarding‑led support when there are concerns someone may be susceptible to being drawn into terrorism. Safe Newcastle’s Prevent information emphasises that concerns can be discussed and referrals can be made through agreed routes.

What to do in everyday practice

If you notice a change in behaviour and you are concerned someone may be susceptible to radicalisation, use the Newcastle “NOTICE, CHECK, SHARE” approach used in local safeguarding training communications

NOTICE

If you NOTICE a change in a person’s behaviour and suspect they may be vulnerable to radicalisation record concerns factually (what you have seen/heard, dates/times, context). If you’re worried about someone and want to find out more about Prevent before making a referral, visit the ACT Early website.

CHECK

Check with your manager or safeguarding lead / designated safeguarding lead (DSL).

SHARE

Share the concern through the local Prevent route and/or contact the Prevent team for advice.

In an emergency where your own or others’ safety is at risk call 999.

Who to Contact and How to Refer

Any professional in Newcastle (e.g. teacher, social worker, housing) can discuss concerns by emailing prevent@newcastle.gov.uk.

To make a Prevent referral, you can use the National Prevent Referral Form.

If you are a member of the public or work in the voluntary sector, you can call the ACT Early Support Line on 0800 011 3764, in confidence, to share your concerns with our specially trained officers. The Support Line is open 24 hours every day. Please note this phoneline is for the public, friends and family that may be worried about someone close to them. Statutory partners (NHS or Education) should seek advice regarding prevent from the local safeguarding lead, the local authority safeguarding hub or fill out the National Prevent referral form.
