SUMMARY:Knife Crime Awareness Training
DESCRIPTION:The Northumbria Violence Reduction Unit in partnership with Newcastle City Council Children’s Social Care are offering Knife Crime Awareness training for practitioners across Newcastle. \nThe purpose of the training is to give professionals a better understanding of this topic including the law around knives and offensive weapons\, factors that increase a person’s vulnerability to becoming both a perpetrator and a victim\, and awareness of some local and national initiatives to tackle knife crime. \nThis training is suitable for anyone working with young people and also those working in other settings where this could potentially be an issue. \nBy attending this training\, practitioners will be more confident in their knowledge and understanding of the issue and therefore more able to support those they are working with. This will also support early identification and intervention leading to a reduction in involvement in violent crime. \nThis is a two hour seminar and a workbook will be provided to ensure that practitioners have an understanding of issues relating to knife crime. \nPlease Note: \n\nTraining will start at 10am\, but please ensure you arrive 15 minutes early.\nIf you are travelling by car\, please allow extra travel time to allow for parking.\nTea and Coffee will not be provided\, but feel free to bring your own!\n\n  \nFor more information or to book a place please click on the links below: \n3 November 2025  9.45am – 12pm    Newcastle Civic Centre\, Pandon Room \nNewcastle City Council staff book via iLearn HERE \nExternal staff book via EventBrite book here: \nBOOK A PLACE ON 3 NOVEMBER

SUMMARY:Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Trauma
DESCRIPTION:This half-day session will cover: \nBasic human needs: \n\nwhat ‘good enough’ parenting/development/childhood looks like;\nthe impact of ACEs on the concept of ‘good enough’;\nthe\, often\, profound consequences when ACEs are multiple and/or repeated.\n\nThe neurobiology of threat: \n\nthe developing brain;\nthe specific vulnerabilities of children and teenagers to psychological trauma forming and ‘deforming’ their developing brain and ‘self’;\nwhy people do not usually react in ‘logical’ or ‘active’ ways when faced with intimate interpersonal threat;\nthe impact of the lack of understanding of why the person did not behave ‘logically and actively’\, on the individual him or herself (resulting in guilt\, shame and feelings of responsibility and\, ultimately\, potentially lack of – or inaccurate/incomplete – disclosure)\, and\, potentially\, on their interactions with those around them;\nhow\, and why\, people become vulnerable to repeated victimisation;\nhow\, and why\, victims’ can become ensnared with an abuser (perhaps not recognising themselves to be victims); and/or appear to repeat patterns of abuse in multiple relationships (basic attachment\, and object relations\, theory will be used to explain this).\n\nUnmet needs remain ‘needs’: \n\nwhen ACEs are not recognised and addressed\, in a timely manner\, the traumatic legacy can be significant and impact every area of an individuals’ life for decades. Without intervention broken things often become more so with “time”: not less;\nrecognising that significant vulnerability to repeated exploitation\, abuse and harm\, is an almost inevitable consequence of repeated\, unaddressed\, ACEs;\nunderstanding that what is often perceived to be the ‘problem’ may\, infact\, be a symptom of\, or indeed the ‘answer’ the person has found to\, the actual problem (which is almost assuredly the persons’ experience of ACEs).\nunderstanding what is required from the professional to better support people.\n\nThe importance of looking after ourselves\, and our colleagues\, in doing this work: \n\nthe potential impact of working with\, and hearing about\, traumas;\nwhat we can do to better support ourselves to stay ‘healthy’.\n\n  \nFor more information or to book a place click on the link below: \nCourse: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Trauma- Zoe Lodrick \n  \nIf you do not have access to iLearn then please complete booking form (download here) and return to wfdadmin@newcastle.gov.uk
