SUMMARY:Working Systemically with Families
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore how practitioners can work more effectively with families by adopting a multisystemic approach. It will focus on understanding the wider systems that influence a family’s circumstances including family relationships\, peer groups\, schools\, communities and professional networks – and how these factors can impact engagement and outcomes. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to reflect on barriers that can make it difficult for families to engage with services and consider strategies for building stronger\, more collaborative relationships. The workshop will emphasise the importance of understanding families within their wider context and working alongside them to identify and overcome challenges. \nDrawing on principles from Multisystemic Therapy (MST)\, the session will share approaches used when working with parents and carers of adolescents. However\, the learning will be relevant to all practitioners who work with children\, young people\, parents and carers\, regardless of service area or role.

SUMMARY:Relevant Agencies Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Relevant Agencies Group meeting and be part of an important conversation about the future of services and support for children\, young people and families across Newcastle. \n\nWhat are Relevant Agencies? \nUnder Working Together to Safeguard Children\, relevant agencies are organisations and services that work with children\, young people and families and have an important role to play in promoting their welfare and safeguarding them from harm. \nBy working together\, sharing information\, contributing expertise and helping to identify emerging issues\, relevant agencies support the safeguarding partnership in understanding local needs\, improving services and achieving better outcomes for children and young people. \nThe Relevant Agencies Group provides an opportunity for partner organisations to come together\, share their perspectives and help shape the priorities and work of the Newcastle Safeguarding Children Partnership. \nTogether\, relevant agencies are a vital part of Newcastle’s safeguarding system\, helping to ensure that children and young people receive the right support at the right time. \n\nThis session will provide a valuable opportunity to hear about the development of Newcastle’s next Children and Young People’s Plan and contribute your views to help shape its priorities. As key safeguarding partners and stakeholders\, your insight and experience are essential in ensuring the plan reflects the needs of children\, young people and families across the city. \nThe meeting will also include an update on the Families First reforms and what these changes mean for practice in Newcastle. Colleagues will hear about local developments\, emerging opportunities and how services are working together to implement the new approach to supporting children and families.

SUMMARY:Rethink Formulation Half Day Face to Face Workshop
DESCRIPTION:These workshops are for Practitioners and managers working with children and families in Newcastle on a statutory or early intervention basis. \nReThink Formulation is a key component of a Relational and Restorative Approach to Practice. When working with families\, services can get into a pattern of assessments and short-term interventions that end when there have been improvements. However\, families often need help again. Rethink Formulation uses an evidence-based model of case formulation to help us organise information and structure our conversations to reach a shared understanding of a family and their presenting issues\, from which we can base our plans. This formulation can travel with the family into different services and should reduce the number of assessments they have by providing an effective way to analyse the information we already have about their strengths and needs. Rethinking what we know about a family\, and what we then do with that knowledge\, is key to working with that family in a restorative and sustainable way. \nThis is a half day of intensive coaching in the art of formulation. You will learn what the Rethink Formulation model is\, the theory behind it\, where else you might see the principles of formulation and be given the opportunity to practice the model\, and consider how else the model may be used creatively in your practice with children and their families. \nBooking Form \nTo book a place\, please complete booking form and return to wfdadmin@newcastle.gov.uk

SUMMARY:Youth Voice Insights into Education on Exploitation
DESCRIPTION:Between October 2025 and January 2026 The Children’s Society consulted young people across England and Wales to obtain their views and opinions on education delivered to children on exploitation. \nThe findings have revealed clear gaps in both the content and delivery of child exploitation awareness sessions\, with young people calling for a more realistic and engaging approach. One which gives them hope and teaches them where to get help rather than warning them of potential dangers and consequences. \nAs one young person put it: \n“Tell us who we can be\, not who we shouldn’t be.” \nJoin us in this session for professionals at all levels to hear more about what young people told us and the practical steps needed to ensure that education on exploitation is hitting the mark and empowering young people to get help when they need it. \nIn this session for professionals\, we will; \n\nShare the views and opinions of young people from across England and Wales including what they think is working well\, what isn’t and what changes they would like to see.\n\n\nFocus in particular on police delivery in schools and the clear\, practical steps police and other professionals can take to help build trust and confidence with young people to enable them to engage with these sessions.\n\n\nConsider implications for comms campaigns and other messaging for young people\, including on topics such as fraud\, county lines and knife crime.\n\n\nProvide insights into how services can learn from young people and their experiences while making sure the process is mutually beneficial rather than extractive and prioritises young people’s safety at all times.\n\nBook Now

SUMMARY:Restorative Practice Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Restorative Practice is a pro-active strengths-based approach that reinforces the importance of building and maintaining positive relationships by seeking to understand the needs of the people in your community. The Restorative Approach involves a journey of change using the principles of collaboration and inclusion. \nIn this session we will look at the behaviours and skills that you already use in your practice\, to create these long-lasting relationships\, as well as reflect on how your actions and attitudes can influence and change relationship dynamics. This interactive session will combine presentation material with reflective activities and opportunities for delegates to ask questions. \nBy the end of the session you will be able to map your practices against the ‘Four ways of being’ model\, and begin to reflect on how you can start to encourage and empower others using high challenge and high support. You will have a greater understanding of techniques that can be used to build connections and community\, for example ‘Check in circles’. \nBooking Form \nTo book a place\, please complete booking form and return to wfdadmin@newcastle.gov.uk

SUMMARY:Financial Exploitation
DESCRIPTION:The Financial Exploitation of children and young people is not new\, however it is emerging as a growing concern\, particularly in relation to children being tricked\, coerced\, and forced into financial crime. This includes being targeted by an individual or an Organised Crime Group\, who exploit children and young people to commit fraud and launder criminal funds through their bank accounts. This is a form of Child Criminal Exploitation. \nChild Exploitation is Child Abuse. Financial exploitation can cause significant harm to a young person and have long lasting effects on their life. It can also be connected to other harms including child sexual abuse/exploitation. Yet despite this\, the financial exploitation of children and young people is not well understood and can often be overlooked. \nAt The Children’s Society\, we are developing our understanding of financial exploitation and advocating for professionals to view it as a specific harm type unto itself\, as well as understanding its context within and connection to other forms of exploitation and abuse. In this session for all professionals interacting with children and young people we will: \n• Explore recent learning and emerging insights on the financial exploitation of children and young people\, including from our recent reports ‘Moving money | The Children’s Society and our youth voice report Tackling financial exploitation: Youth voice insights | The Children’s Society \n• Share experiences from The Children’s Society’s national Prevention Programme’s work alongside learning from partners including law enforcement\, social care\, and the banking and finance sector. \n• Consider the implications of our findings with regards to safeguarding young people from harm and preventing their exploitation. \n• Create an interactive opportunity to hear about how other professionals are responding to this emerging area. \nProvide a space to consider your own ability to identify and respond to Financial Exploitation and contribute to The Children’s Society’s evidence gathering and research on this topic. \nBook Now

SUMMARY:Transitions to adulthood: Preventing exploitation as a children approach and turn 18
DESCRIPTION:The transition to adulthood is an extremely important stage in the life of a young person\, as they explore choices around identity\, relationships\, rights and responsibilities and navigate finding their place in the adult world. But for young people harmed through exploitation and abuse\, the transitional stage from 16 to 18+ can all too often seem like a “cliff edge” (Holmes and Smith 2022)\, where the support and protection afforded to younger children can often disappear at the same time that risks of harm and abuse from perpetrators increases. \nWhat can we do to make sure that we afford older children their rights as victims of exploitation? How can we work together to ensure that young victims of exploitation are effectively identified\, safeguarded and supported across their transition to adulthood in a holistic\, child-centered way? \nIn this session\, we will: \n\nIntroduce the key principles of a transitional safeguarding approach and why this is so important for preventing and tackling exploitation in older children and young adults\n\n\nExplore the exploitation risks and harms that can impact older children across the transition to adulthood\n\n\nSeek to reframe narratives and approaches to victimhood in relation to older children and young adults who experience exploitation – and to overcome bias\, discrimination and siloed working to ensure all victims are recognised and receive appropriate support.\n\n\nReflect on our own practice and experiences of working with young people transitioning from child to adulthood.\nShare examples of promising practice in relation to transitional safeguarding for young people who have been exploited or are at risk of exploitation\n\nBook Now

SUMMARY:Anti-Racist Practice and Child Exploitation
DESCRIPTION:We are making progress in our fight against exploitation\, but it is clear that responses and outcomes are often not the same for all children and young people. Racially and ethnically minoritised young people are more likely to face disadvantage because of our assumptions and biases\, siloed working\, exclusionary practice\, and wider social inequalities which impact our ability to protect them from harm. \nIn this session we will explore what it means to take a proactive ‘anti-racist’ approach to tackling child exploitation and why this is essential to ensuring we can support and safeguard every young victim. \nIn this session for professionals\, we will: \n\nConsider how our assumptions and biases can influence our efforts to identify\, prevent\, and disrupt the exploitation of children and young people and the impact of disproportionality and discrimination on protecting young people from these forms of harm\n\n\nFurther consider how institutional racism compromises our efforts to prevent exploitation by impacting on young people and communities trust in services and their likelihood to seek help or report exploitation and abuse concerns\n\n\nExplore ‘adultification’ and the importance of recognising victimhood in older children and young adults\n\n\nExplore how we can improve practices to protect and respect young people\, and take an intersectional and holistic approach to working with them\, in order to ensure that all children and young people receive the support they need\n\n\nDemonstrate the value of anti-racist practice in the fight against child exploitation and abuse and the importance of taking a person-centred\, holistic approach.\n\nBook Now

SUMMARY:Overcoming Gender Assumptions: Tackling Exploitation for Young People of All Genders
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore how our assumptions about gender can lead to us failing to protect young people from exploitation and harm and what we can do to overcome these in our practice and in our systems. Our assumptions\, stereotypes and biases on issues of gender can impact young people’s experiences of exploitation\, shape the way professionals perceive and interact with them\, influence the support they receive and even the way we design our services. Gender is also fundamental to the way that young people think about themselves\, their identities\, as well as their experiences of exploitation and abuse. \nThis session will focus in particular on: \n\nExploitation risks for transgender\, non-binary and gender diverse young people\n\n\nGirl’s experiences of criminal exploitation\n\n\nBoy’s experiences of sexual abuse\n\nIn this session for professionals we will: \n\nExplore how gender and gender assumptions can impact a young persons experience of exploitation\n\n\nChallenge the way gender-based assumptions can influence our ability to recognise and respond to exploitation in children and young people\n\n\nConsider gender inclusive approaches to identifying\, assessing\, and supporting children and young people\n\n\nDemonstrate the value of a person-centred\, holistic and inclusive approach to understanding and responding to exploitation and abuse\n\nBook Now
